Now those who smoke ganja in public places in Raipur are in trouble, police tightened the noose – being sent to jail after arrest.
Raipur (Team GDNews): Raipur Police has further intensified its campaign against drugs and has now started strict action against those who smoke ganja in public places. In the last two days, the police have arrested seven accused red-handed while smoking ganja. Chillum, ganja, lighter and other materials have been seized from them and a case has been registered against all of them under section 27 of the NDPS Act and they have been sent to jail after presenting them in the court.
The atmosphere was deteriorating due to the nuisance of drug addicts
Complaints were coming from almost every police station area of the city that some people in a state of intoxication abuse and create ruckus in public places, due to which the life of the common people had become difficult. Taking cognizance of this, Raipur Range IG Amarej Mishra had recently instructed in a review meeting that strict action should be taken not only against those who trade in drugs, but also against those who consume drugs and those who support them.
What is the provision in the law?
Under Section 27 of the NDPS Act, consuming narcotics like ganja is a non-bailable offense, which carries a provision of punishment up to one year. On the other hand, drinking alcohol in public places is prosecuted under Section 36 (C) of the Chhattisgarh Excise Act, which is bailable. Due to this, there has not been a significant reduction in the number of alcohol drinkers, but in cases of drugs like ganja, the police are now taking action to send them directly to jail.
It is worth noting that not only trading, but also consuming, storing, producing or purchasing banned drugs like ganja, heroin, chitta, opium, brown sugar comes under the category of crime.
Monitoring of online companies too
SSP Dr. Lal Umed Singh said that the police had sent notices to many online companies demanding a ban on the sale of buttoned knives and drug-related items, after which many companies have agreed to stop the sale of these items in Chhattisgarh. The vigilant monitoring of the police has now been extended to online platforms.
Strict steps expected – security will increase in public places
With this strictness of Raipur Police, it is expected that the number of drug addicts in public places in the city will decrease. The administration says that this campaign will continue in the future as well and a “zero tolerance” policy will be implemented against drug abuse.
