Raipur. Cardiologists of Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI) located at Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital have registered a new achievement in the medical field. Angioplasty of a 70-year-old patient, declared unsuccessful in a private hospital, was successfully done using Excimer Laser Coronary Angioplasty (ELCA) technique. Cardiologists from across the country saw and learned the live demonstration of this complex procedure on a virtual platform.

This case was led by Dr. Smit Srivastava, Head of Cardiology Department. Along with him, Dr. Kunal Ostwal, Dr. S.K. Sharma, Dr. Pratik Gupta along with the team of nursing staff and technicians played an important role. The patient was treated free Complex Case, Unique Solution

Dr. Srivastava said that the patient’s right coronary artery had excessive calcium deposits, due to which traditional angioplasty was unsuccessful. The origin of the artery was also at a higher height than normal, which made the procedure more challenging. In such cases, the ELCA technique proves to be effective, in which the calcium deposits are broken down with the help of a laser.

A catheter was passed to the heart through the artery of the patient’s right arm. Calcium was removed with the help of laser by crossing the obstructed vein with a hard guide wire. After this, the remaining calcium was removed by cutting balloon after getting an accurate picture of the inside of the vein with IVUS (intravascular ultrasonography). Finally, the procedure was completed by placing two stents.

This procedure was demonstrated live during a workshop organized in Jabalpur on the occasion of the National Conference of the Cardiological Society of India.
